Time to Feed the Birdies!

One of the most amazing things that Steve and I discovered about living up here in rural southern Oregon is the number of bird species that we see! We have books to help identify the species and we've marked off at least twenty types!

Baby bird season is upon us so we cleaned up our feeders and bought 170 pounds of bird seed for $65.00! We go to a store that sells individual types of seed in huge bags which we mix and store in a barrel with a sealed lid to keep the seed fresh, dry, and free of bugs.

Our first visitors of the season are the delightful and adorable Juncos, which look a little similar to Chickadees but are a larger and not nearly as round and fluffy. (They visit our feeders too!) Juncos are seen here from late fall to early spring and we love to watch them gobbling up seeds and arguing with one another over the best spot to get seeds!

This fellow is making sure everyone knows this is HIS feeder..."Step AWAY from the feeder! All of these seeds are MINE!"

This Junco takes a peek in my direction between his ravenous cracking of millet seed. (on the right is a block of suet, which is beef fat mixed with cracked corn and other goodies, and attracts Northern Flickers, Acorn Woodpeckers and many other birds including Juncos.)
